How Dieting Can Affect Your Mood
Dieting is done for many reasons. There are people who do it in order to fit into a smaller size. There are also people that diet for medical reasons such as heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. No matter what your reasons for dieting are there are always questions. For instance, how does dieting affect your mood? It is true that dieting can affect anyone’s mood though there are many factors to take into consideration when looking at how severely this will affect your mood.
One of the first things affected when you begin a diet is your emotional well being or "your mood". No matter which basic diet you are on, low carb, low fat or something where the food is provided like Nutrisystem or Medifast your overall mood is affected. People starting on low carb diets tend to have more fluctuations in their moods and find themselves feeling more tense, annoyed and overall unpleasant when weaning themselves off the sugar. Low fat diets have less of a tendency to affect people’s moods as much as a low carb diet does. Another diet that many people may try is what they call a "swing diet". This is where you switch your diet style to incorporate a cheat day. Example, if you were on a low fat diet you stay on it for 3 or 4 days and then give yourself a cheat day. The idea of this is to throw off your metabolism, which can actually make you keep losing weight. People using this type of dieting tend to have less mood fluctuations but may not be as successful in losing the weight.
Another thing that many people tend to overlook that influences how dieting affects their mood is their mindset about dieting itself. Many people tend to think of dieting as depriving their body. The point of dieting is not to deprive the body but to change your habits into healthier eating habits for you. It is important to keep in mind that you will not be making yourself healthier. It is important to fix your mind on the positives of dieting; the fact that you will be losing weight and you will also be improving your health as well. Think about the positive ways that the dieting will change your life and you will find that the dieting will not affect your mood as severely. Keep in mind that having a positive outlook is a good basis for life in general and dieting is no different.
Many people find dieting to be comparable to quitting smoking. However, the nice thing is that, just as with breaking any habit and creating new, the unpleasant feelings will only last for a short time. After a while, you will find that you will grow to love the foods that you are eating. As you lose weight and get your body healthier, you will find that your mood will be affected yet again. You will find that you will be in better spirits, have more stamina and energy, not to mention better self confidence.
